Why Inside Miters Matter at Roof Valleys

An inside miter is the corner piece that carries a gutter guard around an inside corner — the interior angle where two runs of gutter meet, usually directly beneath a roof valley. That corner is the hardest-working spot on the whole gutter: the valley above it funnels a large share of the roof’s runoff straight into it, so it is exactly where debris collects and water is most likely to back up.

Leaf Deflector’s answer is a pre-made L-shape miter with a flush lip. Because the corner is formed at the factory instead of field-cut and pieced together, the screen runs continuously around the corner with no fabricated seam to trap leaves — keeping water moving through the corner and valley rather than pooling at the seam.

The High-Flow Inside Miters are an accessory that complements the Leaf Deflector Gutter Guard: the main runs use a Large 24 mesh, while the miters step up to an Extra Large 16 mesh sized specifically for the high-volume inside corner.

How to Install High-Flow Inside Miters

Prepare the gutter corner, fit the miter using a fascia mount or an under-shingle mount, then install gutter guard on both sides.

Download Installation Guide (PDF)

Fascia Mount

Trim to fit and secure the rear screen to the fascia.

  1. Clean and seal the gutters.
  2. Place the miter over the gutter area and mark where to trim for a proper fit.
  3. Leave the rear screen 1/2 inch longer when trimming so it can bend up for attachment to the fascia.
  4. Screw the rear screen to the fascia to secure the miter.
  5. Mount the front of the miter to the gutter lip.
  6. Install gutter guard on both sides of the miter.

Under-Shingle Mount

Fit the miter beneath the roof shingles and valley.

  1. Clean and seal the gutters.
  2. Gently lift the roof shingles and valley at the corner.
  3. Cut the corners on the miter.
  4. Slide the miter under the roof shingles and valley.
  5. Mount the front of the miter to the gutter lip.
  6. Install gutter guard on both sides of the miter.

After installation, use a brush or leaf blower to clean the miter when needed.

High-Flow Inside Miters FAQ

What is an inside miter on a gutter guard?
An inside miter is the corner piece that wraps a gutter guard around an inside corner — the point where two runs of gutter meet at an interior angle, typically beneath a roof valley. Leaf Deflector's High-Flow Inside Miters are pre-made L-shape sections built for exactly that spot, so the screen continues cleanly around the corner instead of leaving a gap.
Why do inside corners and valleys need a special part?
Roof valleys funnel a large share of a roof's runoff into the inside corner of the gutter below. That concentrated flow is where debris collects and water is most likely to back up. A pre-made L-shape miter keeps the mesh continuous and the corner open, so water keeps moving through the valley rather than pooling at the seam.
How do the High-Flow Inside Miters keep water moving?
They are formed as a single pre-made L-shape with a flush lip and a 6-inch front width on both the left and right legs, so the high-flow screen carries straight through the corner. Pairing a wider front face with the raised 304 stainless steel screen lets the heavy valley runoff pass through instead of sheeting over the front of the gutter.
What mesh do the High-Flow Inside Miters use?
They use an Extra Large 16 mesh made from 304 stainless steel with a 0.018-inch wire, roughly 256 holes per square inch. The larger 16-mesh opening is what gives the miter its high flow at the corner, where the volume of water is greatest.
How is the 16 mesh on the miters different from the 24 mesh on the main guard?
The Leaf Deflector Gutter Guard uses a Large 24 mesh for the main gutter runs. The High-Flow Inside Miters step up to an Extra Large 16 mesh, a more open weave sized specifically for the high-volume inside corner. The miter is a complement to the main guard, placed only at the corners that carry valley runoff.
What are the High-Flow Inside Miters made of?
The screen is 304 stainless steel with a raised screen-ridge pattern, the same all-metal, noncombustible screen material used across the Leaf Deflector line. There is no plastic, vinyl, or foam in the part.
Are the inside miters pre-made, or cut on site?
They are pre-made L-shape corners. Because the corner is formed at the factory rather than field-cut and pieced together, the installer gets a consistent flush-lip miter at every inside corner, with no fabricated seam to trap debris.
Are the High-Flow Inside Miters covered by the No-Clog Gutter Guarantee?
Yes. The High-Flow Inside Miters carry the No-Clog Gutter Guarantee. For details on the exact terms of the guarantee, confirm coverage with your certified Leaf Deflector installer.
